I know that to the people who use these editors for short time (they edit a file and quit or they use the app for a day and then it's months before they touch it again) this doesn't mean much. I often forget to hit Cmd+S and if the app has been running for a while or you try some option that you haven't used, the probability that it will crash and that you will lose some work increases. For some stuff (like playing with Rails), TextMate is still OK but for anything serious, lack of auto save and recovery is something that's become unacceptable to me.

View image here: - ) It can be set not only to save after a certain number of characters that you've typed but also by the time that has expired since it was last saved. Now as a comparison, my 30+ year old Emacs passes both tests with flying colors. We're in 2009 and "modern" apps still can't recover documents after the crash. Upon restart, did it prompt you to recover? Was your text shown in the document if you tried opening it? Didn't think so. Start the app, create a new document, save it, write a paragraph, minimize and then Force Quit. Well, maybe the "modern" apps can't recover a document that was never saved. Did you see a notice saying "Hey, your app crashed or was quit unexpectedly. Let the app sit for 5 min or so and then Force Quit it. Don't click on save and just minimize it to the background. Open up your favorite graphical text editor (doesn't matter what it is), create a new document and write a paragraph of anything. I'm not talking about some graphics intensive apps that need to save megabytes of texture and history to recover anything, I'm talking about simple text processing apps. Every now and then, at the worst possible time if you believe in Murphy's law, an app that I'd use would crash and upon the restart of the app, no option to recover my document would come up. The issue of autosave and recovery has been bugging me for years.
